Beatbox à l'Orchestre (OPRL)

In brief

Interactive Body Music performance with the Orchestre Philarmonique Royal de Liège.

A cultural and artistic project run since 2023 by Cie Airblow and OPRL, updated in 2024 with the participation of Belgian Beatbox world champion Footbox G.

In 2023, Gaspard Herblot was approached as a beatboxer by Fanny Gouville, in charge of cultural action and educational development at OPRL. The idea was to set up an educational concert featuring interactive Body Music performances.

Following the great success of this first edition, the concept was repeated in 2024, this time with a second beatboxer whose work cleverly complements that of Gaspard Herblot. He is the young FootboxG, world beatbox champion in Berlin in 2023.

In concrete terms, Fanny Gouville and Gaspard choose music that is well-known to young people ("Pirates of the Caribbean", "Star Wars" or "Harry Potter"), as well as lesser-known music with more complex rhythms. Gaspard first works alone to compose accompaniments for all these tunes. The accompaniments use body percussion and beatbox techniques, as well as Konnakol (a rhythmic vocal practice based on onomatopoeia from traditional South Indian music).

Workshops are then set up in which Gaspard teaches his compositions to different groups of students. The aim is for them to be able to perform these pieces with precision in concert with the OPRL.
And finally comes the climax of the whole process: the concert. Gaspard Herblot acts as a link between the orchestra and the children in the hall, so that they can perform the pieces they have worked on in perfect harmony with the orchestra musicians.

The participatory aspect is an essential component of the project. As the icing on the cake, Gaspard Herblot and FootboxG compose solos that they perform with the orchestra. Gaspard's solo on Holst's Suite "Saint-Paul", for example, features asymmetrical metrics. It shows that beatbox is not confined to 4/4 time signatures, and can be integrated into a wide variety of musical worlds.
